Radical Nationalism and fascism

-Distinct difference between conservative nationalism and fascism (radical nationalism)

Fascism

-Advocacy of the complete subjugation of the individual to the will of the governing state

-Hitler saw himself and his Nazi Party embodying the Volkgeist of the German nation

-this led to a leadership cult which allowed no dissent from his will

-those who challenged the will of the leader were therefore traitors to the people

-conservative national leaders have been dominant but have never claimed to embody national will

-That will existed in the collective identity of the people themselves

-Fascism places power and will of the state above the nation

-nation is a servant to the state

Conservative nationalists have been dictatorial but have also been democratic e.g. Churchill and Disraeli
