Peripheral Nervous System

Sensory Reception Process

  • For sensation to occur we need:
    • Receptor specificity (e.g., touch receptors do not respond to light).
    • Stimulus must match receptor specificity and be applied within the receptive field.
    • Transduction occurs:
    • Energy of stimulus converted into graded potential called generator potential or receptor potential.
    • Graded potentials must reach threshold to trigger an action potential (AP).

Levels of Neural Integration

  • Receptor Level: Sensory receptors detect stimuli
  • Circuit Level: Processing in ascending pathways
  • Perceptual Level: Cortical sensory areas interpretation

Classification of Sensory Receptors

    3. Schwann cells divide and form a regeneration tube.
    4. Axon sprouts grow through the tube and reconnect with target cells.
