Formation of ions

  • Ions are made when electrons are transferred, they are charged particles

  • When atoms lose or gain electrons to form ions they all aim to get a full outer shell.

  • Metal ions lose electrons to form positive ions

  • Non metals gain electrons to form negative ions.

  • Number of electrons lost is the same as the charge on the ion.
