Characteristics of Antidotal Measures in Poisoning
Characteristics of Antidotal Measures in Poisoning
Purpose
To neutralize, counteract, or minimize (NCM) the toxic effects of a poison.
Types of Antidotes (CPP)
Chemical Antidotes
React with the poison to neutralize it (e.g., chelating agents for heavy metals).
Pharmacological Antidotes
Work by reversing or inhibiting the toxic effects of the poison (e.g., naloxone for opioids).
Physiological Antidotes
Counteract the physiological effects of the poison by opposing its action (e.g., atropine for organophosphate poisoning).
Administration
Can be administered orally, intravenously, or via other routes depending on the type of poisoning.
