Untitled Flashcards Set
HGAP Omega Review Packet 2024 Official
Unit 1
1. What is the role of a cartographer?
MAKE MAPS
2. What’s the difference between spatial perspective and spatial patterns?
Perspective: Point of view (how you see things) Roman - build architecture in a roman way
Pattern: What it is, It is the pattern. Roman buildings (you see them and you say Wow,
Romans!)
3. Give a real life example of time-distance decay.
China and US are different cause they sooooo far aways. FRIENDS
4. Draw a map, including the following: title, symbols, legend, compass, and scale
Map - compass points in directions
5. What’s the difference between reference and thematic maps?
Thematic maps show data - tell a story.
Reference Map - only for reference - where stuff is
6. For the following, define and give an example of when it would be used.
Map Type Definition Usage
Iso LINE Lines on a map to give values T opographic maps, used to
show common elevation
Topographic Show physical terrain Hiking!
Choropleth COLOR ONE, tool to show
data using color
Show diverse information in a
small area
Cartogram “Funny India Map” Weirdly
shaped not based on actual
distance, it’s using shape and
sizes to convey information
Showing information on a
map quickly and visually
Proportional/Graduated
Circle
CIRCLES - the use of circles
to show specific information
Highlight information. Zombie
Outbreak? You want to know
the epicenter. DONT GO
THERE
Dot Density Use of dots to show info.
Larger Dots - More of stuff
Small dots - smaller thing
Good organization, shows
info and emphasis on bigger
things. THINK CITIES small
vs big ones
7. For the following, list the advantages and disadvantages:
Projection Type Advantages Disadvantages
Mercator Good for navigation (Think
Merc-ator MERC-chan)t
Distortion in both shape and
size
Peters Better - better at conveying
size
Greatly distorts shape
Goode-Homolosine ORANGE PEEL - great on
both size and shape
Splits the oceans and is weird
Robinson Wouldn’t you rather a
Robinson? This is the best
(opinion) Visually appealing-
Not perfect, but minimizes
distortion. Low distortion on
both size and shape
Not perfect, not as accurate
but looks better - some
distortion
8. When is the US Census taken, and what is it used for?
Every 10 years - information - tracking ages, races, all kinds of information. HOUSE OF REPS
representation is decided by the census (Reapportionment)
9. What would the latitude and longitude lines of Plano, T exas be? Which one comes first
(latitude or longitude)? 33.019844, -96.698883
10. What are 0 degrees longitude and 0 degrees latitude called?
0 lat - EQUATOR, 0 long - Prime Meridian (Greenwich Meridian)
11.What’s the difference between GPS and GIS?
GPS shows your location, GIS - Stuff around your location
12. What’s the difference between relative and absolute location?
Absolute is the exact point - in numbers. Relative means directions in relation to.
13. What’s the difference between space and place?
“Placemaking”
Space = Area
Place = What we’ve done to it
People turn Spaces into Places
14. How does the idea of independent innovation relate to diffusion?
Independent Innovation = Similar ideas come up independently of eachother.
Think people across the globe all trying to solve the same problem and have similar solutions
WITHOUT knowing the other guy exists
Diffusion = You do get the idea from someone else
15. Give an example of the following types of diffusion:
Hierarchical
Kings teaching their peasants
Parents teaching their kids
T eachers teaching their students
TOP DOWN diffusion
Contagious
SICKNESS - PLAGUE
Ideas spread like wildfire or disease.
Doesn’t matter who you are, it spreads.
Stimulus - you take the general idea but make it yours
Sesame Street but in different countries.
The basic idea is the same
BUT CHANGED for the specific culture
Relocation
People moving and taking their culture with them - IT DOES NOT MEAN SPREAD (yet)
Person 1 moves to a different culture = New Country has Person 1’s culture in it, but not that it’s
spreading per se
16. What is a real life case study that supports….
Environmental Possibilism - Humans decide
Humans make our own decisions and it’s US (humans) who get to shape our culture
Think Air Conditioning = we can live anywhere
Environmental Determinism - The environment decides
Imagine you have someone who lives in a desert - what kind of life would they have?
Desert people will have very similar culture because they’re all responding to that environment
17. Give an example of a map drawn at the following scales:
Global Whole world - the globe
Regional - TWO VERSIONS HERE - 1) Groups of countries (think Southeast Asia)
2) Think like the South of the United States
National - A country
Local - cities (districts)
18. What’s the difference between a regional scale and a local scale of analysis?
As you zoom in - you get more information about an area.
Zoom out shows more but with less detail
Local shows less area but with more detail.
“Scale” = Detail.
19. Describe an example of the Glocal scale of analysis.
Both Global and Local - essentially global issues on a local scale (Outbreaks)
20. Give a definition and an example of the four types of regions…
Region Type Definition Example
Formal Region Area inhabited by people who
have one or more common
traits - Relatively Uniform
Arab speaking world. IF you
can draw circle on a map
grouping that group up.
Functional Region Organized around NODES Pizza Delivery Area
Perceptual Region
(Vernacular)
Perceived to exist by
inhabitants
American Southerns think
they’re a group “The South”
