Laboratory Apparatus and Scientific Processes

Laboratory Apparatus

  • General Lab Equipment

    • Safety glasses: Used for eye protection.
    • Beaker: A cylindrical glass container for stirring, mixing, and heating liquids; available in various sizes.
    • Conical flask: A flask with a conical body and a cylindrical neck, used for swirling liquids without spilling.
    • Funnel: Used for guiding liquid or powder into a small opening.
    • Test tube: A glass tube used for holding small samples or conducting small-scale reactions.
    • Test-tube holder: Used to hold test tubes, especially when heating.
    • Wash bottle: A squeeze bottle used to rinse glassware.
    • Tongs: Used to grip and lift objects, especially when hot.
    • Spatula: Used for scraping, transferring, or applying powders and paste-like chemicals or treatments.
    • Glass rod: Used for stirring solutions.
    • Thermometer: An instrument for measuring temperature.
    • Electronic scale: Used for accurate measurement of mass.
  • Heating and Combustion

    • Bunsen burner: A gas burner used for heating and sterilization.
    • Tripod: A three-legged stand used to support apparatus during heating.
    • Wire gauze: A square mesh of metal wire, often with a ceramic center, used to support glassware during heating with a Bunsen burner to distribute heat evenly.
    • Combustion spoon: Used for burning small amounts of solid substances in a gas jar.
  • Separation and Evaporation

    • Evaporation dish: A shallow ceramic or glass dish used for evaporating liquids.
    • Watch glass: A circular concave piece of glass used as a surface to evaporate a liquid, to hold solids while being weighed, or as a cover for a beaker.
    • Retort: A glass container used for distillation or dry distillation of substances.
    • Retort stand: A stand to hold and support laboratory glassware and equipment.
  • Volumetric Measurement

    • Measuring cylinder: A graduated cylinder used to measure the volume of a liquid.
    • Burette: A graduated glass tube with a tap at one end, for delivering known volumes of a liquid, especially in titrations.
    • Pipette: A slender tube used for transferring or measuring out small quantities of liquid.
    • Volumetric flask: A flask calibrated to contain a precise volume at a particular temperature, used for preparing standard solutions.
  • Timing and Miscellaneous

    • Stopwatch: Used for measuring time intervals.
    • Rubber stoppers: Used to seal flasks and test tubes.

Scientific Processes
