The Respiratory System
Celular respiration: releases energy in mitochondrion
External respiration: breathing
Pulmunary: to do with the lungs
Inhale: breathing in
Exhale: breathing out
Functions
Take in O2 for respiration
Energy from food
Remove CO2 gas
Remove water vapour gas
Parts of the respiratory system

Gaseous exchange
Alveoli are covered in capillaries
Alveoli and capillaries are 1 cell thick
Oxygen => diffuses into capillaries
Gaseous exchange: oxygen is swapped with carbon dioxide

How we breath
Inhaling
Diagram and intercostal muscles contract
Rib cage gets pulled up and out
Pressure drops => air drawn in
Exhaling
Muscle relax => no energy needed
Air is compressed
Pressure increases => air pushed out
Smoking & itâs effect on lungs
Causes damage to lungs
Tar => bronchus => makes mucous => canât be cleared
Nicotine => damages heart and blood vessels
Carbon Minoxide => Strains heart
Cancer
During pregnancy => stuns child growth
Breathing rate
12-16 breaths per minute
Exercise: more energy needed => increases breath rate
Rest: less energy needed => reduces breath rate
