Aims and membership

Four main aims:

• Discourage aggression - Collective Security
• Encourage cooporation - especially business and trade
• Encourage disarmament
• Improve living conditions

Britain and France were the most powerful countries in the League- any action of the LoN would need their support.

Strengths of Britain and France as leaders:

• Strong Military
• Strong trade
• Two most powerful countries

Weaknesses:

• Britain was more interested in keeping its own country strong.
• France was still focussed on Germany - worried about protecting themselves from Germany.
• They both doubted from the beginning how effective it would be without the USA (trade sanctions would not work)
