Pronouns

  • Direct Object Pronouns: Answer the questions who/what after the verb.
    • Me, te, lo/la, nos, os, las/los (me, you, him/her/you/it, us, you, them/you)
  • Indirect Object Pronouns: Answer the question to/for whom (less often: to/for what). Refers to people.
    • Me, te, le, nos, os, les (to me, to you, to him/her/you, to us, to you, to them/you)
  • Reflexive Pronouns: Refer back to the subject.
    • Me, te, se, nos, os, se (myself, yourself, himself/herself/yourself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves/yourselves)
  • Position of Pronouns
    • Before the conjugated verb: Te Amo = I love you.
    • After and attached to an infinitive and a present progressive verb with an accent: Tengo que verlo. Está comprándome una camisa.

Preterite, Imperfect, and Imperfect Subjunctive

  • Imperfect Subjunctive Trigger: It will be after a subjunctive trigger.
    Example: Era bueno que la abuela tuviera desoderante.

Preterite vs. Imperfect

  • Preterite: Relates elements/actions that advance the plot.
  • Imperfect: Fills in details, descriptions, and circumstances.
    • Time, appearance, feelings, background info, weather, ongoing action, repeated action.
  • Imperfect Triggers: muchas veces, a veces, siempre, nunca, cada día/semana/mes, cuando era joven…
  • Preterite Triggers: una vez, ayer, la semana pasada, el viernes pasado…
  • Interrupted Action: Combines imperfect (background action) and preterite (interrupting action).
    • Example: Hablaba con Señora Barba cuando Achuth me hizo una pregunta (que ya podía contestar).

Commands

  • One Rule: Except for affirmative Tú commands, use the subjunctive form.
Examples
  • Tell the truth, Mr. Watkins. Diga la verdad, Señor Watkins.
  • Don’t lose the book, brothers. No pierdan el libro, hermanos.
  • Let’s eat lunch. Almorcemos.
  • Hello friend, don’t touch the microwave. Hola amigo, no toques el microondas.
Affirmative Tú Commands
  • Use the third-person singular form of the regular indicative present tense except for irregular commands.
  • Bring the pain. Trae la pena.
  • Eat your peas. Come tus chícharos.
  • Come here now. Ven aquí, ahora.
Pronouns with Commands
  • Affirmative Commands: After, attached, accent.
  • Negative Commands: Normal position (before the verb).
  • Be quiet Macklin and Andrés! Cállense Macklin y Andrés!
  • Don’t put it there Mr. President. No lo ponga allí, Sr. Presidente.
Para and Por
  • Para: Means "for" (except when it doesn't).
    • Destination: Salgo para escuela a las siete.
    • Purpose (+ noun): Usa el azucar para el café.
    • Recipient: Lo traje para ti.
    • Comparison: Para un chico, es bastante inteligente.
    • Employment: La profesora trabaja para la IAM.
    • Para + infinitive = in order to: Necesito la luz para leer.
    • Deadlines (For, by): Necesito el poster para el lunes.
  • Por: Means "by, along, through"
    • Motion or location: Corro por el parque.
    • Means by: Nos hablamos por Skype.
    • Unit of Measure: Conduce 70 miles por hora.
    • Used in Passive Voice: El libro fue escrito por Fuentes.
    • Duration (for): Estuvimos en escuela por 8 horas.
    • Reason/Motive (on behalf of, because of, for): Habla por toda la escuela.
    • Object of a search (for): Salió por sus gafas.
    • In exchange for: Compramos la camisa por diez pesos.
