Topic 1 : MEASUREMENT, ASSESSMENT & EVALUATION
MEASUREMENT
Process of determining the attributes or characteristics of physical objects generally in terms of QUANTITY.
WE MEASURE: HEIGHT, DISTANCE, WEIGHT ETC.
TESTING - A formal, systematic procedure for gathering information.
TEST - an instrument used to measure a
construct and make decisions.
Manners of Measurement:
Objective - measurements are more stable. Measurements will produce more or less the same outcome.
Ex. Multiple Choice, Identification, True or False , Matching Type
Subjective – measurements are more on perceptions. Measurements will not produce the same outcome.
Ex. Essay, Projects/Products, Performance
Ways of Interpreting Measurement Results:
1. Norm-Referenced - measure performance of students compared with the other (to rank students).
2. Criterion-Referenced - measure performance of
students against the standard (to determine achievement of the skill)
PERSONALITY TEST - Measures the characteristic patterns of traits that people exhibit across various situations.
DIAGNOSTIC TEST - Is a test that helps the teacher and learners identify problems that they have with the language.
ACHIEVEMENT TEST - Measures skills and knowledge learned in a given grade level, usually through planned instruction, such as training or classroom instruction.
INTELLIGENCE TEST - A test designed to measure the ability to think and reason rather than acquired knowledge.
SOCIOMETRY - Measures relationships between people.
VOCATIONAL TEST - Examines which occupations best fit with an individual’s abilities, interests, and personality.
ASSESSMENT
The process of gathering evidences of students’ mastery of skills.
Types of Assessment:
1. Traditional Assessment - Students typically
select an answer or recall information to complete
an assessment. Usually rely on a single correct
answer
2. Authentic/Alternative Assessment
Performance/Product Assessment - students are asked to perform/produce real world task that demonstrate meaningful application of essential skills
Portfolio Assessment - A collection of Student’s work–contains purposefully subset of student work.
Approaches/Purpose of Assessment
1. Assessment FOR learning (Formative Assessment)
DURING the Teaching Process
Done to improve and ensure learning
2. Assessment OF Learning (Summative Assessment)
Usually given at the END of the: Unit, Grading Period, Term
3. Assessment AS Learning
To let students monitor and evaluate their own learning
Assessment is learning itself
Example: Self assessment survey/ rubrics, KWL
EVALUATION
Root word “value” and French - evaluer

Evaluation Categories:
Formative - Judging the worth while the program/subject are in progress.
Summative - Judging the worth of the program/subject at the end of the activities.
