Introduction to the Limbic System

Emotion: A short-term subjective experience
Drive: A primitive survival urge (eating, drinking, sex, fight or flight)
Terminology: "Limbus" means "border"
The limbic system forms a structural border between the Diencephalon and the Neocortex.
It also serves as a functional border between Nonconscious and Conscious areas of the brain.
Importance: Emotions, drives, and memories shape our involuntary and voluntary actions.

Primary Functions
Acts as the master controller of homeostasis:
Maintains physiological processes & internal environments at optimal levels.
Influences other body systems, including hormones, metabolism, temperature, hunger, thirst, and more.
The Hypothalamus: Effect on Endocrine System
Connection: Links the nervous system to the endocrine system via the infundibulum.
Pituitary Gland: Known as the master gland; controlled by the hypothalamus.
Lobes of the Pituitary:
Anterior lobe: Releases hormones.
Posterior lobe: An extension of the hypothalamus.
The Hypothalamus: Effect on Autonomic Nervous System
Control Center: Major control center of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS).
Sympathetic Division: Activated in stress (fight, flight, freeze).
Increases blood flow to muscles; decreases blood flow to skin and GI tract.
Symptoms: Increased heart rate, blood pressure, blood sugar, pupillary dilation.
Parasympathetic Division: Conserves energy (rest and digest).
Increases blood flow to skin and GI tract; decreases heart rate and blood pressure.
Damage to Hypothalamus
Can disrupt homeostasis leading to issues like:
Irregular body temperature
Altered heart rate
Changes in hunger/thirst levels
Other behavioral changes (e.g., passivity vs. rage)
2) Olfactory Structures
Pathway: Olfactory bulbs → Olfactory tracts → Primary olfactory cortex (located near the amygdala).
Function: Primary function is olfaction.
Some fibers travel to the amygdala and septum, linking olfaction to emotion and memory.
Proust Effect: Memory triggered by smell.
Damage can result in anosmia (loss of smell).
3) Hippocampus
Named for its shape ('seahorse').
Location: Deep within the parahippocampal gyrus, in the limbic lobe.
Function: Involved in declarative (explicit) memory; converts short-term memory to long-term memory.
Primary Input: From the entorhinal cortex, which receives inputs from various brain areas, linking sensory perception and emotions.
Septal area: Associated with reward and euphoric sensations.
Outputs: Entorhinal cortex and fornix (pathway to other structures).
Damage Results: Anterograde memory loss.
4) Amygdala
Description: Almond-shaped structure composed of about a dozen nuclei.
Location: Medial temporal pole, anterior to the hippocampus.
Primary Function: Links perception with emotional responses, especially danger.
Involvement in Emotions: Key in fear, anxiety, aggression, appetite, and rage.
Interprets facial expressions and social cues; important for emotional learning and empathy.
Inputs: Receives sensory and emotional information from multiple brain areas.
Outputs: Sends information to cortex, basal nuclei, and other brain regions to coordinate emotional responses.
Damage Effects: Can lead to overeating, social phobia, and impaired emotional memory.
5) Limbic Lobe / Cortex
Overview: Found only on the medial aspect of each hemisphere; encircles the corpus callosum and diencephalon.
Components:
Cingulate Gyrus: Processes emotions, motivations, and behaviors.
Parahippocampal Gyrus: Involved in memory.

Lobe: Region of cortex with similar anatomy/function.
System: Array of structures with a similar function.
