Tracking Assessment
Phase 1: (Orange) Button 1 is assigned to HQ4, the TARGET response. Tally:
(Blue) Button 2 is assigned to HQ1, the ALTERNATIVE response. Tally:
Present two buttons: “If you press this button (b1), you will get [top 2 apps], if you press this button (b2), you will get an ipad with no apps.”
Participant presses a button, and the researcher allows access for about 30 seconds.
Continue trials until the participant reaches 3 consecutive responses towards the target button.
If the participant does not make a response within 30s, provide the prompt stated in step 1.
If 3 consecutive responses are not made by participant in the first 3 trials, researcher continues phase 1 until:
3 consecutive responses are made OR
The participant makes 5 target responses out of 9 trials, and the researcher moves to phase 2.
Phase 2: (Orange) Button 1 is assigned to HQ1, the ALTERNATIVE response. Tally:
(Blue) Button 2 is assigned to HQ4, the TARGET response. Tally:
Present two buttons: “Okay, something different is going to happen. If you press this button (b1), you will get an ipad with no apps, if you press this button (b2),you will get [top 2 apps].”
Participant presses button, researcher allows access for 30s.
Researcher repeats steps 1-3 until participant reaches 3 consecutive responses towards the target button.
If the participant does not make a response within 30s, provide the prompt stated in step 1.
If 3 consecutive responses are not made by participant in the first 3 trials, researcher continues phase 2 until:
3 consecutive responses are made OR
The participant makes 5 target responses out of 9 trials, and the researcher concludes assessment.
Forced Choice
B1 Target Response Button = HQ4 and B2 Alternative Response Button= HQ4
Researcher Presents both buttons and says “Touch this button” and points to it. Participant touches the button. Researcher delivers HQ4 ipad for 30s, “My turn”
Researcher immediately says “Touch this other button” and points to it.Participant touches the button. Researcher delivers HQ4 ipad for 30s, “My turn”.
Researcher moves onto the Quality degradation phase.
Quality Degradation Phase
Researcher will run degradation protocol until the participant goes through all of the quality degradations OR engages with the alternative response for 5 consecutive responses.
Phase A: HQ4
Target Response = HQ4 iPad. Tally:
Alternative Response = FR1+ HQ4 ipad. Tally:
Researcher presents both buttons and says “Pick a button”.
If the participant does NOT make a response within 30s, provide a prompt again, “Pick a button”.
If participant picks the target button, participant gets access to HQ4 iPad for 30s.
If participant pick the alternative button, the researcher requires the participant to complete one math problem (FR1) to get access to HQ4 iPad for 30s.
i. Researcher verifies the completion and of participant’s response to math problem.
ii. If the participant does NOT make an accurate response, the researcher says “Try again”.
-If the participant is still wrong, offer them the correct answer and allow them access to
The HQ4 iPad.
2. Researcher repeats step 1 until participant engages with the same button whether it be
target or alternative) for 5 consecutive responses, or 5 of 9 trials.
3. Researcher moves onto the next HQ degradation.
Phase B: HQ3
Target Response = HQ3 iPad. Tally:
Alternative Response = FR1+ HQ4 ipad. Tally:
Researcher presents both buttons and says “Pick a button”.
If the participant does NOT make a response within 30s, provide a prompt again, “Pick a button”.
If participant picks the target button, participant gets access to HQ3 iPad for 30s.
If participant pick the alternative button, the researcher requires the participant to complete one math problem (FR1) to get access to HQ4 iPad for 30s.
i. Researcher verifies the completion and accuracy of participant’s response to math
problem.
ii.If the participant does NOT make an accurate response, the researcher says “Try
again”.
If the participant is still wrong, offer them the correct answer and allow them access to
the HQ4 iPad.
Researcher repeats step 1 until participant engages with the same button for 5 consecutive responses, or 5 of 9 trials.
If the participant makes 5 consecutive responses to the alternative, the researcher reverses back to Phase A.
i. Researcher goes through steps in HQ4 phase until complete.
ii. Researcher returns back to HQ3 phase until complete.
Researcher moves onto Progressive Ratio if participants make 5 consecutive responses to the alternative again.
If the participant makes 5 consecutive responses to the target, the researcher moves onto the next HQ degradation.
Phase C: HQ2
Target Response = HQ2 iPad. Tally:
Alternative Response = FR1+ HQ4 ipad. Tally:
Researcher presents both buttons and says “Pick a button”.
If the participant does NOT make a response within 30s, provide a prompt again, “Pick a button”.
If participant picks the target button, participant gets access to HQ2 iPad for 30s.
If participant pick the alternative button, the researcher requires the participant to complete one math problem (FR1) to get access to HQ4 iPad for 30s.
i. Researcher verifies the completion and accuracy of participant’s response to math problem.
ii. If the participant does NOT make an accurate response, the researcher says “Try again”.
-If the participant is still wrong, offer them the correct answer and allow them access to
the HQ4 iPad.
Researcher repeats step 1 until participant engages with the same button for 5 consecutive responses, or 5 of 9 trials.
If the participant makes 5 consecutive responses to the alternative, the researcher reverses back to Phase A.
i. Researcher goes through steps in HQ4 phase until complete.
ii.Researcher returns back to HQ2 phase until complete.
Researcher moves onto Progressive Ratio if participants make 5 consecutive responses to the alternative again.
If the participant makes 5 consecutive responses to the target, the researcher moves onto the next HQ degradation.
Phase D: HQ1
Target Response = HQ1 iPad. Tally:
Alternative Response = FR1+ HQ4 ipad. Tally:
Researcher presents both buttons and says “Pick a button”.
If the participant does NOT make a response within 30s, provide a prompt again, “Pick a button”.
If participant picks the target button, participant gets access to HQ1 iPad for 30s.
If participant pick the alternative button, the researcher requires the participant to complete one math problem (FR1) to get access to HQ4 iPad for 30s.
i. Researcher verifies the completion and of participant’s response to math problem.
ii.If the participant does NOT make an accurate response, the researcher says “Try again”.
-If the participant is still wrong, offer them the correct answer and allow them access to
the HQ4 iPad.
Researcher repeats step 1 until participant engages with the same button for 5 consecutive responses, or 5 of 9 trials.
If the participant makes 5 consecutive responses to the alternative, the researcher reverses back to Phase A.
i. Researcher goes through steps in HQ4 phase until complete.
ii.Researcher returns back to HQ1 phase until complete.
Researcher moves onto Progressive Ratio if participants make 5 consecutive responses to the alternative again.
If the participant makes 5 consecutive responses to the target, the researcher implements EXT.
i. Researcher no longer provides access to HQ1 iPad for any response made to the target
button.
Researcher DOES NOT say anything to the participant.
If the participant switches to the alternative response, the researcher moves onto Progressive Ratio.
Progressive Ratio (PR) Assessment
PR Schedule: FR1, FR2, FR5, FR10, FR20
Orange) Button 1 TARGET response. (No reinforcement)EXT Tally:
(Blue) Button 2 ALTERNATIVE response. (Math Problem) Tally:
Researcher says “Pick a button”.
If participant does not make a response within 30s, provide the prompt again,“Pick a button”.
If participant picks alternative, the researcher requires an FR1.
Researcher verifies completion and accuracy of participant’s response to math problem.
If the participant does not make an accurate response, the researcher says “try again”.
Participant get access to HQ4 for 30s.
Researcher repeats steps 1-4, progressively increasing work requirements, as described in the PR schedule, until participant hits FR20 or engages in a target response.
Researcher concludes session.
