Colonial Strategy

As Europe began to establish colonies in America their strategies and tactics European Native relations varied widely.This happened because each nation had vastly different goals.

  • British- Large Scale Immigration

Spain

Wealth and Religious conversion

Their goals led to both suppression and incorporation of natives in colonial society they used Mining and agriculture to find wealth and the Encomienda and Mission system to to subjugate the native peoples. They later incorporated African slaves. And organized the Population into the Casta system

French and Dutch

Trade and Alliance

They would trade to acquire furs and some other goods. They used intermarriage in order to strengthen alliances and trade relations. They didn’t have too much settlement rather they mainly had economic exploitation.

British

Large Scale Migration

The English migrated in large numbers, this resulted in distinct social economic structure. They were seeking:

  • Social mobility

  • Economic Prosperity

  • Religious Freedom

  • Improved Living Conditions

They focused mainly on agriculture, making farms- on native land. They mainly lived someplace separate from natives unlike the French and Dutch.
