The Frustration-Aggression Theory by Dollard et al.

In contrast to drive theories, Dollard and his colleagues (Doob, Miller, Mowrer, and Sears) attempted to maintain the dynamic properties contained in the psychoanalytic concept without the "fuzzy and unnecessary assumption" of an aggression drive. Their approach made no reference to the internal, emotional state of the individual. In this model, frustration was viewed merely as an external stimulus term, specifically defined as "the hindrance of goal reactions" (Behinderung von Zielreaktionen\text{Behinderung von Zielreaktionen}). This narrow definition has been criticized as being inadequate given the ambiguity and incomprehensibility of human behavior.

The theory developed by Dollard states in its strictest form that frustration leads in every case to some form of aggression, and conversely, the occurrence of aggression always presupposes a preceding frustration. Physically, frustrations increase a person's state of arousal, which can be clearly demonstrated physiologically. This state of arousal can be returned to the normal range through aggressive behavior, resulting in a subjectively noticeable sense of relief. According to the laws of learning, this relief reinforces the behavior, making it likely that corresponding reactions will be repeated in similar situations to achieve that state of relief again.

However, experiments have also shown that the arousal resulting from frustration can be reduced through other behaviors, such as conversation or laughter. An arousal state, even when experienced as anger, only leads to aggression if a specific object or circumstance is present that provokes aggression through specific stimuli. In this explanatory model, frustration is the disruption of an existing goal-directed activity, and aggression is understood as a behavioral sequence aimed at injuring a person or an "organism surrogate" (Organismussurrogat\text{Organismussurrogat} or substitute object).

In a later development of the theory, particular attention was paid to the explicit distinction between overt aggression and the "instigation to aggression" (Anreiz zur Aggression\text{Anreiz zur Aggression}). The expanded concept states that frustration creates incentives for some form of aggression. Aggression only occurs if the stimulus for aggression achieved through frustration stands at the top of the hierarchy of different stimuli. If other stimuli in this hierarchy take precedence, aggression is prevented—at least temporarily—and replaced by other behaviors. Consequently, the more non-aggressive reactions are extinguished by long-lasting frustration, the more likely it becomes that the possibility of aggressive behavior will grow stronger. From a pedagogical-psychological and sociological perspective, it is significant that aggressive behavior always represents the result of a learning and socialization process. Like almost all complex human behaviors, aggressions are learned.

Introduction to the Nature and Function of Emotions

Emotions are fundamental adaptive reactions of the body to external stimuli. They do not exist merely so that we feel good or bad, but to improve our chances of survival (U¨berlebenschancen\text{Überlebenschancen}). When faced with challenges, emotions cause us to bundle our attention and spur us to action. For instance, when we experience fear, our heart begins to race, our muscles tense, and our senses are sharpened. Conversely, when we experience unexpected joy (such as a special gift or a good grade), tears may come to our eyes, and we feel strengthened and self-confident.

The complex nature of emotions can be illustrated by the common childhood experience of being lost in a large supermarket. At age 4 or 5, a child might be captivated by the toy department, only to realize their parents have disappeared. This triggers a sequence: the heart races (physiological), the child runs through aisles searching (expressive behavior), and they experience despair while thinking "I will never find my parents!" (cognitive interpretation). Scientists debate the sequence of these components. The three core aspects of an emotion are defined as:

  1. Physiological Arousal: Such as a racing heart (Herzrasen\text{Herzrasen}).
  2. Expressive Behavior: Physical actions like running around or searching.
  3. Conscious Experience: Composed of cognitive interpretation (e.g., "I'll never find them!") and feelings (e.g., fear, despair).

The James-Lange Theory of Emotion

Proposed by American psychologist and philosopher William James and Danish physiologist Carl Lange, this theory challenges the intuitive idea that conscious awareness of a feeling precedes physical symptoms. James believed the emotional process actually runs in reverse: a stimulus does not directly trigger an emotion, but instead causes bodily processes and physiological activation first. The emotion only arises through the perception of these bodily reactions.

James famously stated that we feel "sad because we cry, angry because we strike, afraid because we tremble" (James, 1884). This theory suggests that emotions can occur independently of a mental assessment. For example, people cry at moving films before they have consciously thought about the plot, or they feel fear toward spiders despite knowing they are not lethal in Germany.

William James personally applied this theory to combat his own depression, suggesting the "trick": "To be in good spirits… look around cheerfully and act as if good spirits were already there!" (James, 1889). A study by Robert Sousignan in 2002 supported this by showing that the act of smiling (controlling facial muscles to create a smile) actually leads to a better mood.

The Cannon-Bard Theory of Emotion

Physiologist Walter Cannon found the James-Lange theory unintuitive. He argued that bodily reactions are not specific enough to trigger the wide variety of feelings humans experience; physiologically, one cannot distinguish if a heart is racing due to fear, anger, or love. In 1927, Cannon published a critique supported by animal experiments. He discovered that animals with severed spinal cords, who had lost most of their bodily sensation, still showed clear emotional reactions. Similarly, studies by Bermond and colleagues (1991) with paraplegic patients showed that they reported consistently strong emotional excitability.

Cannon and his colleague Philip Bard concluded that the conscious feeling is not dependent on the bodily reaction. Instead, physiological activation and the experience of emotion occur simultaneously. When a stimulus occurs, it is sent to the regions of the cerebrum (Großhirn\text{Großhirn}) to trigger the sensation while simultaneously being sent to the sympathetic nervous system (Sympathikus\text{Sympathikus}) to activate the body's vegetative reactions. One does not cause the other; they happen at the same time.

The Two-Factor Theory of Emotion (Schachter-Singer)

Social psychologists Stanley Schachter and Jerome Singer (1962) proposed that emotions require both a physical reaction and a cognitive label. According to this theory, an emotional experience requires a conscious interpretation of physiological arousal based on previous experiences and the current situation.

The Bridge Study (Dutton & Aron, 1974): In an experiment, men crossed a long, narrow, swaying suspension bridge. At the end, while still full of adrenaline, they were approached by an attractive young woman who gave them her phone number for follow-up questions regarding a test they completed. A second group of men crossed a safe bridge. The men from the first group called the woman significantly more often and wrote about sexual themes more frequently in the test. This occurred because they misinterpreted their high adrenaline state (from the dangerous bridge) as an effect of the woman's attraction (misattribution of arousal).

The Park Scenario: A woman walking in a park at night hears footsteps. Her heart races. According to Schachter and Singer, her resulting emotion depends on her assessment (Bewertung\text{Bewertung}):

  • If she interprets the steps as a threat, she feels Fear.
  • If she knows the steps belong to her date, she feels a pleasant tingling.
  • If she attributes the racing heart to her fast walking or hunger, she may feel no emotion at all.

Classification and The Seven Basic Emotions (Paul Ekman, 1971)

Paul Ekman identified seven universal basic emotions that are expressed through specific facial markers:

  1. Happiness (Joy): A genuine (Duchenne) smile includes "crow's feet" (Kra¨henfu¨ße\text{Krähenfüße}) around the eyes, raised cheeks, and tension in the muscles surrounding the eyes while the mouth corners are raised. In a fake smile, the eyes do not "participate," and the eye ring muscles remain relaxed.
  2. Fear: Eyebrows are high and slightly drawn together, upper lids are raised, lower lids are tense, and lips are stretched toward the ears.
  3. Surprise: Eyebrows are raised, eyes are widened, the mouth is slightly open with the lower jaw dropped, and facial muscles are relaxed.
  4. Sadness: Upper eyelids droop, eyes lose focus and drift away, and the corners of the mouth are slightly pulled down.
  5. Disgust: Eyebrows are lowered and slightly drawn together, the nose is heavily wrinkled, the upper lip is strongly raised, and the lower lip is pushed forward.
  6. Anger: Eyebrows are pulled down and together, the gaze is piercing, lower eyelids are tense, and lips are narrow and pressed together.
  7. Contempt: Upper eyelids are slightly lowered (looking down), the nose is wrinkled on one side, one mouth corner is tense and raised, and the chin is slightly tilted up.

The Ten Basic Emotions and Unconscious Processing (Izard & LeDoux)

Caroll Ellis Izard (1977) identified ten basic emotions: Joy, Interest/Excitement, Surprise, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, Fear, Contempt, Shame, and Guilt. Izard's research on childhood emotions showed that all except contempt, shame, and guilt are observable in infants, as the latter three require cognitive development and maturity. He posited that all other emotions are combinations of these ten (e.g., Love = Joy + Interest).

In 2007, Izard refined the definition of basic emotions as expressions of specific affective processes originating from evolutionarily old brain regions activated by specific environmental stimuli. For instance, "Interest" motivates a child to explore and learn. Negative emotions like fear, sadness, disgust, and anger typically function automatically and stereotypically within a short timeframe without conscious thought.

Joseph LeDoux (1989) developed the concept of "unconscious emotion." He argued that fear is triggered via the amygdala (Mandelkern\text{Mandelkern}) and other subcortical areas directly, without initial involvement of the cerebral cortex (Großhirn rinde\text{Großhirn rinde}). This provides an evolutionary advantage by allowing the organism to react to danger instantly. According to LeDoux, fear is generated in two steps: first, an unconscious signal from the amygdala, followed by a signal through the cortex. Consequently, while we cannot prevent the initial fear response (like flinching at a sudden noise), conscious cognition can quickly suppress the bodily reaction once the brain explains the source of the stimulus.
