Notes on the Humoral Immune Response

Immune System Overview

  • The immune system works through various mechanisms to identify and respond to pathogens.

B Cells and Their Function

  • B cells can recognize specific antigens present on bacteria and pathogens.
  • Upon recognizing an antigen, a B cell attaches to the bacterium and initiates an immune response.
    • This attachment signals that the B cell has found a "recognized" target.

Activation of B Cells

  • For full activation, B cells require assistance from T cells.
    • T cells are produced in the thymus, and they play a crucial role in confirming the presence of the same protein/antigen found on B cells.
  • Once a T helper cell engages with a B cell displaying the recognized antigen, it activates the B cell.

Clonal Expansion

  • Activated B cells undergo rapid division (cloning), resulting in two main types of cells:
    • Memory Cells: Store the memory of the recognized antigen for faster response in the future.
    • Plasma Cells: Produce free-floating antibodies which target specific antigens in the bloodstream.

Antibody Types

  • Membrane Bound Antibodies: These are attached to B cells and are crucial for antigen recognition.
  • Free Floating Antibodies: Produced by plasma cells, these antibodies circulate in the body and bind to pathogens.

Humoral Response

  • The process of antibodies binding to pathogens increases the difficulty for pathogens to navigate and infect.
  • This aspect of the immune response is referred to as the humoral response, involving B cells.
    • Recognizes antigens in blood and lymphatic fluid.

Role of Phagocytes

  • Phagocytes, like macrophages, play an important role in engulfing pathogens.
    • They are activated when antibodies bind to pathogens, which signals them to clear the invading microbes.
  • This additional help is known as opsonization, enhancing the phagocytic ability to eliminate pathogens.
    • Opsonization: The marking of pathogens by antibodies to enhance their uptake by phagocytes.

Innate vs. Adaptive Immunity

  • Innate Immunity: The body's first line of defense against pathogens, which includes barriers and phagocytes.
  • Adaptive Immunity: More specific and systemic, activated through B and T cells, leading to a stronger and quicker response upon re-exposure to the same pathogen.
