Fundamental Movement Patterns

Define Movements in our 3d world

Anatomical Position

  • Standing upright

  • Arm at side

  • Palms supinated

  • Feet flat on floor

  • Facing straight ahed

Sagittal plane

  • Divides left and right

  • Rotates on Frontal axis

    • Move front and back

Frontal plane

  • Divides front and back

  • Rotates on Sagittal axis

    • Move side to side

Transverse Plane

  • Divides top and butter

  • Rotates on Longitudinal axis

    • Can on only rotate (like a Beyblade)

Movement

Angular Movements

  • Increase od decreases the joint angle

    • Flexion

      • Decrease angle

    • Extension

      • Increase angle

    • Adduction

      • Towards midline, decrease in angle

    • Abduction

      • Away from midline, increase in angle

Circular movement: rotational movement

  • Internal rotation

    • Toward midline

  • External rotation

    • Away from midline

  • At time left or right rotation

Insertion

  • Location where the muscle attaches

    • Typically on the bone

    • During contraction the muscle pulls the insertion closer together

    • Muscle has proximal and distal insertion

  • Monoarticulate

    • Muscle that crosses one joint

  • Biarticulate

    • Muscle that crosses two joints

Functional Fitness

  • Have the physical capacity of perform activates of daily living in a safe and independent manner without undue fatigue

    • Strength

  • SAID principle

    • Optimal transfer of the exercise benefit is achieved when the movements and intensities most closely match the demands of a given task

      • Complete exercise that have high carry over to activities in daily life

Fundamental Movement patterns

  • Squat

  • Hip hinge

  • Lunge

  • Push

  • Pull

  • Rotation

Phase of an exercise

  • Concentric phase

  • Eccentric phase

Be capable of using basic coaching technique to help ither improve movement skills

Verbal and non-verbal cues are useful

  • Learning through association linking new concepts to things someone is already familiar with

  • Create an optimal learning environment

  • Optimize your instructions

    • Don't overload with cues

    • Focus on the ideal movement

  • Provide feed back

Valsalva Manoeuvre

  • Force exhalation against a close glottis

  • Increase abdominal pressure which can stabilize the spine

  • Increase health risk for those with vascular diseases
