Exam Details

Fill in the Blank Section

  • Contains 11 questions.

Total Value

  • The exam is worth 19 points in total.
  • Each question may be worth one to four points.

Word Bank and Scantrons

  • Each is worth two points.

Essay Section

  • The rest of the exam consists of essays.
  • There are three essays in total.
  • Each essay is worth 10 points.

Essay 1: Mini-Biography

  • The first essay topic is provided in advance.
  • You need to write a mini-biography of one of six people discussed in class.
  • Content: Background, upbringing, what they did, why they were important, and any interesting trivia.
  • Choose one person out of the six that interests you the most and do extra research about them.
  • You will be asked smaller questions about all six throughout the exam, but this essay requires focusing on one in detail.
  • Preparation in advance is recommended.
Note Card
  • You are allowed to use a note card (both sides) for the exam.
  • You can use it as you wish. Many students use it for bullet points for this essay.

Essays 2 & 3: Writing Analysis

  • The other two essays involve writing analysis.
  • There will be five writing examples from different people studied this semester.
  • You must choose two out of the five examples that interest you the most.
  • Write a minimum four to five sentence essay for each chosen example.
  • Content: What is the person talking about? Who are they writing to? Why are they writing this? What is the message? How do you interpret it?
  • The test will identify who wrote each example and the general reason or audience for their writing.
  • Any potentially difficult words in the writing samples will be defined in brackets to aid understanding.

Important Note Regarding Essay Formatting

  • Do not cram your writing into the small spaces between the writing selections.
  • Two full blank pages are provided for your essays.
  • Use the blank pages to write your essays.
  • Points will be deducted if you cram your writing into the limited space or if it is illegible.

Exam Weight

  • The exam is worth 20% of your full semester grade.
  • You will have your entire semester grade by Saturday.
