Notes on Basic Concepts in Assessment and Evaluation

OBJECTIVE

  • A statement of a specific trait or behavior that is targeted for instruction and acquired by the learner that assessment has to capture if attained or not.

  • At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:

    • demonstrate knowledge of the fundamental concepts, purposes, and principles in assessment and evaluation;

    • prepare a graphic organizer describing the relationship of the fundamental concepts in assessment and evaluation;

    • cite specific examples where they can apply the principles of assessment and evaluation.

COMPETENCY

  • A statement of a complex trait or behavior that is targeted for instruction and acquired by the learner that assessment has to capture if attained or not.

  • LET Competency: Apply principles in constructing and interpreting alternative/authentic forms of high quality assessment.

TEST

  • A test is an instrument designed to measure any characteristic, quality, ability, knowledge, or skill.

  • It comprises of items in the area it is designed to measure.

MEASUREMENT

  • A process of quantifying the degree to which someone or something possesses a given trait.

ASSESSMENT

  • A process of gathering and organizing quantitative or qualitative data into an interpretable form to have a basis for judgment or decision making.

  • Source: PNU, LET Refresher Course (2015), p. 143.

EVALUATION

  • A process of systematic interpretation, analysis, appraisal or judgment of the worth of organized data as basis for decision-making.

  • It involves judgment about the desirability of changes in students.

TRADITIONAL ASSESSMENT

  • It refers to the use of pen-and-paper objective test.

  • The slide includes a matching exercise (Column A vs Column B) with items such as:

    • Column A:

    1. Person who performs mysterious tasks no one understands

    2. Person who provides schooling for children

    3. Person who enables a group to find solutions

    4. Person who instructs adults in a classroom

    • Column B:
      A. Facilitator
      B. Trainer
      C. Instructional Designer
      D. Meeting Organizer
      E. Teacher

  • The slide also shows True/False indicators for some statements.

  • This section illustrates a traditional, pen-and-paper format for assessing learning.

ALTERNATIVE ASSESSMENT

  • It refers to the use of assessment methods that are not pen-and-paper objective tests, which includes performance tests, projects, portfolios, journals, and the like.

AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT

  • It refers to the use of assessment methods that stimulate true-to-life situations.

  • This assessment requires methods that are parallel to what we experience in real life and most of these methods are categorized as performance-based assessment.

ADDITIONAL NOTES

  • End-of-lesson outcomes emphasize understanding fundamental concepts, purposes, and principles; creating a graphic organizer to illustrate relationships; and citing practical examples.

  • Measurement, Assessment, and Evaluation definitions are sourced from the LET Refresher Course (2015), p. 143.

  • The slide sequence visually contrasts traditional (pen-and-paper tests) with alternative and authentic assessment approaches, including real-life, performance-based methods.
