Conformity

norms: society’s understood rules for accepted and expected behavior

social contagion: the spontaneous spread of behaviors

  • chameleon effect: mimicking the actions of your surroundings

mood linkage: the sharing of moods

conformity: adjusting our behavior or thinking to coincide with a group standerd

normative social influence: influence resulting from a person’s desire to gain approval or avoid it

informative social influence: influence resulting from a person’s willingness to accept other’s opinions about reality

obedience

obedience: complying with an order or a command

personal control: the power of the individual

social control: the power of the situation

minority influence: the power of one or two individuals to sway majorities

social facilitation

social facilitation: in the presence of others, improved performance on simple and well-learned tasks and worsened performance on difficult tasks

social loafing: the tendency for people in a group to exert less efort then when they are doing it themselves

deindividuation: loss of self-awareness and self-restraint occuring in group situations that foster arousal and anonymity

group polarization

group polarization: the enhancement of a group’s prevailing inclinations through discussion w/in the group

groupthink: thinking that occurs when the desire for harmony in a decision-making group silences dissenting views
