• collection of city states (1200)

• formed by Greece and territories scattered around the Mediterranean and Black Sea

City states were independant political units and had a different political system.

==Oligarchy== = (oligo-few, arkhos-leader)

a city ruled by a small group of people

==Tyranny== = (tyrannos-usurper)

one ruler who came to power by force

==Democracy== = (demos-body of citizens + cratos-power)

power to the citizens (minority in Athens)

Athens is powerful thanks to its access to the sea, its protection by the Great Walls and the mountains and its silver mine helps with the trade.

democracy was imrpved by Pericles in 450BCE
