CHAPTER 1

EARLY ROLE OF PSYCHOBIOLOGY

  • Karl Spencer Lashley - brain is active, dynamic, organizing behavior.

  • Donald Hebb - Cell Assemblies


  • Cell Assemblies -
    - neural coordinated structure will develop if there is a frequent stimulation.



  • B.F. Skinner -
    - He wrote an entire book about the theory of Lashley and Hebb the book was about the Language acquisition and usage could be explained purely by environmental contingencies.


  • Linguist Noam Chomsky - “review on bf skinner”
    - stressed both biological basis and creative potential of language.
    - there are infinite number of sentence we can produce with ease.


“We learned language by reinforcement”


COGNITION CAN BE VIEWED IN 3 DIFFERENT KIND OF COMPONENTS
(Highly Interdependent Components) MPK

  1. 1st: Higher Order Process (Meta components) - Meta
    - used to plan, demand, monitor, and evaluate.

  2. 2nd: Lower Order Process (Performance components) - performance
    - follow the demands of meta components

  3. 3rd: (Knowledge Acquisition Components) - knowledge
    - used for learning and how to solve problems


Correlational Studies -

If the experimenter do not want to deceive their subject by using “manipulation” to the experiment.


PSYCHOBIOLOGICAL RESEARCH

Studies relationship of the Performance and Cerebral events and structures.

Three Categories:

  1. Studying an Individuals Brain (Postmortem → after the individuals death)

  2. Activities of the brain of the individual who has cognitive deficit

  3. Information about the cerebral processes during the normal performance of cognitive activity.
