FD: Fed. 10

  • James Madison wrote it

  • Answered how the new USC would protect liberty against the majority

  • Many were against pure democracy because the majority would always win and kidnap minorities from voice

Main Points:
  • Factions are an extreme threat to liberty and only a well constructed union can successfully depower them adequately

The only ways to stop factions are to

  1. Remove their causes (stop factions from ever forming)

   1. removing liberty is an option, bad option because its essentially worse than factions in the first place
   2. could make sure all have the same opinions on everything, impossible because of its inevitability

  1. Control their effects (limit their power)

   1. only true option because you can’t remove liberty
   2. done through a republican-style government

Why is a republic the solution?
  • The more people and diversity in a nation, the more itnestes and parties are developed
  • The probability of a common goal surfacing and dominating becomes smaller and smaller
  • Its also harder for factions to even form
  • As more people are added, omre factions will form.
      * Powers will be diluted because there are so many so not one can dominate
      * Competition between them for resources and influence would result in compromises to pass legislation considering the common good and not just the specific interest
