Somatic Cells

  • 46 cells (diploid)
  • 23 cells from dad (1st set)
  • 23 cells from mom (2nd set)

Karyotype - A picture of all chromosomes in an individual’s cells

Preparation

  • Take blood sample → spin it at high speed
  • White and red blood cells will isolate.
  • Stain them and put them underneath equipment.

Homologous Chromosomes

  • Same Size
  • Same Shape

Alleles - Different versions of genes

The 23rd pair of homologs are the sex chromosomes

Females: XX

Males: XY

Homologs 1-22 are autosomes
