Elements of an Information System

An information system is comprised of five essential elements: hardware, software, data, people, and procedures. These elements must interact for the system to function effectively within an enterprise. For instance, in an accounts receivable process, the interaction follows a specific sequence. First, IT staff (people) develop processes (procedures) for recording checks (data) received from customers. Second, employees (people) in the accounts receivable department use a program (software) to enter the checks (data) into the computer. Third, the computer (hardware) performs the necessary calculations to process the data and stores the results on storage media like a hard disk (hardware). Finally, customer statements (the information) are printed on a corporate printer (hardware).

Mobile users connect to networks or the Internet while traveling to transfer information, play games, or watch movies. Power users work with intensive multimedia and industry-specific software.
