La Familia - Family Vocabulary

  • el padre / el papá: The father or dad.

  • la madre / la mamá: The mother or mom.

  • los padres: The parents.

  • Step-Parents Rule: To indicate step-parents in Spanish, add the suffixes -astro, -astra, -astros, or -astras to the end of the root family term.

  • el hijo: The son.

  • la hija: The daughter.

  • los hijos: The children (includes sons and daughters).

  • Step-Children Rule: To indicate step-children, add the suffix -astro, -astra, -astros, or -astras to the base word for son or daughter.

  • el hermano: The brother.

  • la hermana: The sister.

  • los hermanos: The siblings (brothers and sisters).

  • Step-Siblings Rule: To indicate step-brothers or step-sisters, add the suffix -astro, -astra, -astros, or -astras to the base word for brother or sister.

  • el tío: The uncle.

  • la tía: The aunt.

  • los tíos: The aunts and uncles.

  • el primo: The male cousin.

  • la prima: The female cousin.

  • los primos: The cousins (plural, general).

  • el abuelo: The grandfather.

  • la abuela: The grandmother.

  • los abuelos: The grandparents.

  • el niño / la niña: The little boy or little girl.

  • el chico / la chica: The boy or girl.
