Thalamus anatomy

The thalamus is a part of the diencephalon together with the hypothalamus
thalamus on the same height as the midbrain.
The thalamus lays right above the brain stem (centrally located)

The thalamus is the place where all the sensory information of the brain are connected, here they are analyzed and sent to the cortex where actions take place
all senses collected in the thalamus (smell, vision, touch, taste, hearing)
The sensory input goes first to the association cortex and through the medial temporal lobe (where the information are stored → memory consolidation and access also through communication with the thalamus and prefrontal cortex) to then reach the thalamus. The thalamus sends then the information to the prefrontal cortex (action)
the thalamus is involved with the “procedural memory“
the sensory input goes to the association cortex, then to the basal nuclei and then to the thalamus and to the premotor cortex (complex movements !!)
