ELEMENTS OF A SHORT STORY

  1. SETTING - where and when the stay totes place

  • place - geographical location

  • time - historical period, time of day, date, year

  • weather conditions - consider it only it contributes to the overall story

  • mood feeling created at the beginning of the story

2. PLOT - sequence of events.

- planned logical series beginning, middle, end

  • Introduction - characters and settings are reveced

  • rising action - lead to the climax, where complication and conflicts are found

  • climax - highest point

  • falling action- where complications are resolved

  • Denouement - outcome

3. CONFLICT - connects one event to another, making the plot move

  • internal conflict - if the struggle of the main character is within himself

  • external conflict - it the struggle is a force outside the main character

man vs self - struggle with himself

man vs man - mc is at odds with someone else, animal, nature

man vs society - mc struggle against the idea, practices of other people

  • First person - told by one of the characters

  • third person limited - reader gets to see the thoughts of character

  • third person omniscient - author moves to character to character
