Mahabarata vows

1. Bhishma (Devavrata)

  • Vow: Lifelong celibacy and renunciation of the throne to allow his father to marry Satyavati.

  • Impact: Known as "Bhishma" for this terrible vow. It led to succession instability and defined his stoic role in the epic.

2. Arjuna

  • Vows:

    • Took a vow of 12-year exile after entering Draupadi and Yudhishthira's chamber.

    • Vowed to kill Jayadratha before sunset the next day or self-immolate.

  • Impact: These vows drove key war episodes, especially the dramatic slaying of Jayadratha.

3. Bhima

  • Vows:

    • Vowed to kill Duryodhana, Dushasana, and others after Draupadi's humiliation.

    • Promised to break Duryodhana's thighs and drink Dushasana's blood.

  • Impact: Fulfilled each vow with force and fury in the war.

4. Karna

  • Vows:

    • Swore eternal loyalty to Duryodhana.

    • Vowed to only kill Arjuna among the Pandavas.

    • Promised Kunti not to harm any Pandava but Arjuna.

  • Impact: These vows cemented his tragic, conflicted role and limited his actions in war.

5. Draupadi

  • Vow: Would not tie her hair until she could wash it in Dushasana’s blood.

  • Impact: Bhima fulfilled this after slaying Dushasana in battle.

6. Duryodhana

  • Vow: Refused to give the Pandavas even a needlepoint of land.

  • Impact: His unyielding nature made war inevitable and led to his downfall.

7. Ashwatthama

  • Vow: After Drona’s death, vowed to annihilate the Pandava line.

  • Impact: Led to the nighttime massacre of the Pandava children and his subsequent curse.

8. Krishna

  • Vow: Declared he would not take up arms in the war, only serve as Arjuna’s charioteer.

  • Impact: Maintained his vow while guiding the Pandavas with strategy and divine intervention.

9. Yudhishthira

  • Vow: Committed to upholding dharma at all costs.

  • Impact: His moral decisions caused suffering but upheld righteousness and justice.

10. Gandhari

  • Vows:

    • Blindfolded herself for life out of empathy and solidarity with her blind husband, Dhritarashtra.

    • Later, in grief, cursed Krishna that his Yadava clan would perish as hers did.

  • Impact: Her curse leads to the destruction of the Yadavas, fulfilling a tragic cycle.n
