HCPC & IBMS Essentials
HCPC – Regulator and Legal Framework
Protects the public by setting and enforcing professional standards.
Registration with HCPC is legally required to use the protected title “Biomedical Scientist”.
Core functions:
Set Standards (Conduct, Performance & Ethics; Proficiency; CPD; Education & Training).
Approve education / training programmes.
Maintain the public register (≈ Biomedical Scientists, May ).
Investigate fitness-to-practise concerns and impose sanctions.
HCPC Standards (must be met & maintained)

Accredits degrees & training laboratories.
Provides qualifications, publications, events, advocacy, student support.
IBMS Certificate of Competence (CoC)
Mandatory evidence that HCPC Standards of Proficiency are met.
Achieved via IBMS Registration Portfolio completed in an IBMS-approved lab (≈– months).
External IBMS verifier signs off.
Academic Requirements
IBMS-accredited BSc Biomedical Science (e.g., Queen’s University Belfast) or equivalent with IBMS assessment & top-ups.
Until degree, CoC & HCPC registration are complete, cannot use “Biomedical Scientist”.
Routes to HCPC Registration
Sandwich degree with embedded placement & CoC.
Accredited degree → CoC post-qualification with employer.
Non-accredited degree → IBMS assessment + top-up modules → CoC.
Equivalence route (for experienced scientists).
Post-Registration Career Progression
Specialist Portfolio → Band 6 BMS (≈ years; discipline specific).
Higher/Expert qualifications:
