Catagen Phase
Catagen Phase
Overview
The catagen phase is a brief transition phase between the growth phase and the resting phase, marking the end of active hair growth.
Duration
Typically lasts between 2 and 3 weeks on the scalp.
Key Changes
Cell Division
Stops during this phase.
Follicle Changes
The follicle tube shrinks and detaches from the dermal papilla.
The base of the follicle moves upward toward the skin surface.
Melanin Production
Halts, resulting in a non-pigmented lower end of the hair that remains under the scalp until shedding.
