Catagen Phase

Catagen Phase

Overview

  • The catagen phase is a brief transition phase between the growth phase and the resting phase, marking the end of active hair growth.

Duration

  • Typically lasts between 2 and 3 weeks on the scalp.

Key Changes

  1. Cell Division

    • Stops during this phase.

  2. Follicle Changes

    • The follicle tube shrinks and detaches from the dermal papilla.

    • The base of the follicle moves upward toward the skin surface.

  3. Melanin Production

    • Halts, resulting in a non-pigmented lower end of the hair that remains under the scalp until shedding.
