TRI-M MUSIC HONOR SOCIETY FACT SHEET 2022
- The Tri-M Music Honor Society was founded by Alexander M. Harley and his wife, Frances. Alexander was once the chairman of the music department at Maine Township High School, Park Ridge, Illinois. Frances is an honorary member of the Tri–M Advisory Committee and secretary emeritus of the society. She also designed the official Tri-M emblem.
- The society began in 1936 at Maine Township High School and was named the “Maine Music Masters”. It remained a single chapter for sixteen years.
- In 1952, the “Maine Music Masters” became incorporated and renamed as “Modern Music Masters.”
- In 1959 Alexander and Frances Harley wrote and published the Tri-M loyalty song, “Music Masters, Hail To Thee.”
- In 1983 the “Modern Music Masters” became a program of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) where it was renamed as the Tri-M Music Honor Society.
- The Tri-M national office is located at the NAFME (formerly MENC) national headquarters in Reston, VA, outside of Washington, DC. (NAFME stands for National Association For Music Education)
- Since 1952 more than 3,000 chapters have been chartered in the United States and in countries on four continents.
