Definitions

  • Tense: Indicates the time of an action or state of being. Tenses are primarily categorized as past, present, and future.

Types of Tenses

1. Present Tense

  • Simple Present: Describes habitual actions or facts.Example: I eat.

  • Present Continuous: Describes actions happening now.Example: I am eating.

  • Present Perfect: Describes actions that occurred at an indefinite time in the past.Example: I have eaten.

  • Present Perfect Continuous: Describes actions that started in the past and continue to the present.Example: I have been eating.

2. Past Tense

  • Simple Past: Describes actions completed in the past.Example: I ate.

  • Past Continuous: Describes actions that were ongoing in the past.Example: I was eating.

  • Past Perfect: Describes actions completed before a certain point in the past.Example: I had eaten.

  • Past Perfect Continuous: Describes ongoing actions that were happening before another action in the past.Example: I had been eating.

3. Future Tense

  • Simple Future: Describes actions that will occur.Example: I will eat.

  • Future Continuous: Describes ongoing actions that will happen in the future.Example: I will be eating.

  • Future Perfect: Describes actions that will be completed before a certain point in the future.Example: I will have eaten.

  • Future Perfect Continuous: Describes ongoing actions that will continue until a specified future time.Example: I will have been eating.

Tenses Structure

Tenses are constructed using a base verb, which can be modified by auxiliary verbs, depending on the tense.

Present Tense Structure

  • Simple Present:

    • Structure: Subject + base verb (+ s/es for third person singular)

    • Example: He eats.

  • Present Continuous:

    • Structure: Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing

    • Example: She is eating.

  • Present Perfect:

    • Structure: Subject + has/have + past participle

    • Example: They have eaten.

  • Present Perfect Continuous:
