2.8 Moral teachings of Jesus

1. The Moral Teachings of Jesus:
  • Jesus' teachings focus on attitudes, not just actions.

  • He builds on the Old Testament law, fulfilling it by making it more perfect and emphasising how people should feel, not just what they should do.

2. The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12):
  • Part of the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus taught people how to live in a way that pleases God.

  • The Beatitudes are blessings for those who have the right attitude and approach to life. Key examples include:

    • Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. - Matthew

    • Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. - Matthew

    • Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. - Matthew

  • These teachings guide Christians to have a loving attitude and focus on kindness and humility.

3. The Parable of the Sheep and the Goats (Matthew 25:31-46):
  • Jesus tells a story where the Sheep represent those who helped others, and the Goats represent those who ignored people in need.

  • Jesus explains that serving others is the same as serving God.

  • Helping people in need, such as feeding the hungry or visiting the sick, shows love for God, and those who do this will be rewarded with eternal life in heaven.

    • “I was hungry, and you gave me food; I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you welcomed me...” (Matthew 25:35-36).

4. Focus on Attitudes:
  • Jesus taught that starting with the right attitude leads to moral actions. For example:

    • Instead of just avoiding murder, Christians should avoid anger and practice love.

  • His teachings are about having the right intentions, which naturally lead to good deeds.
