2.8 Moral teachings of Jesus
1. The Moral Teachings of Jesus:
Jesus' teachings focus on attitudes, not just actions.
He builds on the Old Testament law, fulfilling it by making it more perfect and emphasising how people should feel, not just what they should do.
2. The Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12):
Part of the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus taught people how to live in a way that pleases God.
The Beatitudes are blessings for those who have the right attitude and approach to life. Key examples include:
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. - Matthew
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. - Matthew
Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. - Matthew
These teachings guide Christians to have a loving attitude and focus on kindness and humility.
3. The Parable of the Sheep and the Goats (Matthew 25:31-46):
Jesus tells a story where the Sheep represent those who helped others, and the Goats represent those who ignored people in need.
Jesus explains that serving others is the same as serving God.
Helping people in need, such as feeding the hungry or visiting the sick, shows love for God, and those who do this will be rewarded with eternal life in heaven.
“I was hungry, and you gave me food; I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you welcomed me...” (Matthew 25:35-36).
4. Focus on Attitudes:
Jesus taught that starting with the right attitude leads to moral actions. For example:
Instead of just avoiding murder, Christians should avoid anger and practice love.
His teachings are about having the right intentions, which naturally lead to good deeds.
