3.2.1a - Tissues, Organs, Organ Systems

Tissues: collection of similar cells that perform a specific function.

• Epithelial - found in animals, consists of sheets of cells; line the surface of organs and have a protective or secretary function; cila act to move mucus away from epithelial surface.

• Xylem - used to transport water and mineral ions throughout the plant; also gives mechanical support.

• Capillaries

Organs: collection of tissues that are coordinated to perform a variety of functions.

• Stomach - muscle tissues churn food; epithelium protect stomach wall and produce secretions; connective tissues hold others together

• Leaf - palisade mesophyll for photosynthesis; spongy mesophyll for gaseous diffusion; epidermis to protect the leaf; phloem to transport organic materials; xylem for water transport.

• Arteries + veins

Organ systems: organs work together as a singular unit to perform particular functions efficiently.

• Digestive system - stomach, oesophagus, salivary glands, duodenum + ileum (small intestine), pancreas and liver.

• Respiratory system - trachea, bronchi and lungs.

• Circulatory system - heart, arteries and veins.
