Chapter 1: Introduction
Thick skin found on palms, soles, fingers, and toes
Contains an extra layer within the epidermis
Epidermis consists of layers: stratum corneum, stratum lucidum, stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, stratum basale
Dermis divided into papillary layer and reticular layer
Papillary layer has capillary loops for heat regulation

Reticular Layer:

Contains pain receptors for detecting mechanical or chemical trauma.
Papillary Layer:
Contains free nerve endings, which are pain receptors.
Acrine or Merocrine Sweat Glands:
Produce watery sweat controlled by the sympathetic nervous system.
Important for temperature regulation through evaporative cooling.
Adipose Tissue:
Contains Pacinian corpuscle for deep touch and pressure sensation.
Chapter 4: Apocrine Gland and Sebaceous Gland
Apocrine Gland:
Produces material broken down by bacteria to create body odor.
Found in axillary and anogenital regions.
Hair Follicle:
Consists of shaft, bulb, and root.
Erector Pili Muscle:
Contracts under autonomic innervation to make hair stand up.
Sebaceous Gland:
Produces oily secretion called sebum for lubrication and bactericidal effects.

Description of Thin Skin
Thin skin lacks apocrine glands.
Found anywhere except axillary and anal genital regions.
Components of Skin Layers
Hair follicle, sebaceous gland, erector pili, eccrine sweat gland, adipose tissue.
Dermis layers: reticular layer (dense fibers irregular connective tissue) and papillary layer (areolar connective tissue).
Presence of dermal papilla, Meissner's corpuscles, nerve receptors, stratum basale with melanocytes and keratinocytes.
