Functions of the Lymphatic System
- The lymphatic system performs several crucial functions in the body:
- Return Fluid to the Bloodstream: The lymphatic system collects excess interstitial fluid (also known as lymph) and returns it to the circulatory system, ensuring proper fluid balance in the body.
- Absorb Fat Molecules into the Bloodstream: It plays a critical role in the dietary absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins through specialized vessels called lacteals, which are located in the villi of the small intestine. These fats are then transported into the bloodstream.
- Help Defend the Body Against Disease: The lymphatic system is integral to the immune system, as it helps to defend the body against pathogens. Locations such as lymph nodes filter the lymph, trapping bacteria and other foreign substances.
- All of the Choices Are Correct: Each of the above functions is vital to maintaining homeostasis and supporting the body’s defense mechanisms.
