Grants Overview
- Non-dilutive cash funding differs from investment funding.
- Types:
- Program: Funding for a specific initiative.
- General operating: Funding for operational expenses.
- Capital: Funding for a building, equipment, etc.
- In-kind: Provides specific items or services rather than cash.
Grants Process
- Letter of Interest (LOI): Brief letter expressing general interest.
- Application: Can have multiple phases; question or proposal form.
- Review: Update grants matrix with grantor feedback timing.
- Decision:
- Awarded: Client may sign a form and provide bank info.
- Denied: Offer to get feedback for the client.
KTC Process
- Grant Research: Review grantor website, grantee portfolio, & Form 990.
- Drafting Phase: Use Google Docs with grant summary/deadline/UN/PW at the top; file in the correct folder.
- Utilize Chat GPT for editing.
- Email POC for grantor requirement questions.
- File all documents correctly at each application phase.
Successful Writing
- Know your audience:
- Federal grant: FORMAL, technical, potential proprietary information.
- Private/foundation grant: More expressive, still formal.
- Basic writing principles apply:
- Avoid: personal pronouns, the word “it”, incomplete sentences, passive voice, fillers, buzzwords.
- Leave no questions: Succinct, clear, detailed narrative.
Client Communication
- Share KTC email, not personal phone number.
- Don't share personal client information.
- Maintain professional rapport (avoid emojis, informal greetings).
- Copy Greg & Haleigh on all client communication.
Expectations
- Fill out the weekly hours sheet two weeks in advance
- Have Slack tab open when in office
- Communicate any questions/concerns/scheduling updates to management
- Staff meetings: 9:30 am daily
Time Off
- Notify management at least 2 weeks in advance
- Update weekly hours sheet
Dress Code
- Business casual, comfortable but professional
- Clothing to avoid: Distressed jeans, graphic T-shirts, hoodies, shorts
- "Zoom Appropriate" attire
