"PAST-FUTURE" Prompting Technique (15 May 2025)

• It is a 2-step technique using contrast for deeper, more creative AI responses.
• It prompts AI to consider what was and what could be.
• It leverages the human understanding of comparisons (before-and-after, then-and-now).
• The technique aims for clearer, richer, and more imaginative outputs.
• It can be used for explaining/teaching, brainstorming/innovation, analyzing progress/change, creating engaging content and comparing different time periods.

Steps to get started

• Step 1: Start with the "PAST."
  • Ask the AI to describe a concept, idea, product, or situation as it used to be.
  • Keep the description specific and simple.
  • Examples:

  • "How did people solve this problem before AI?"
• Step 2: Prompt the "FUTURE."
  • Ask the AI to project forward and describe how the same thing could evolve, improve, or transform in the future.

• Optional Twist: Add a “Present” bridge to create a full Past → Present → Future arc.
