- Early 1800s - Comte developed the positivist approach of creating a ‘science of society’
- 1848 - Marx and Engels write ‘The Communist Manifesto’, beginning a more critical approach to understand society and encouraging a proletariat revolution - conflict theories starting to emerge that are interested in how society is based upon and maintains inequalities, not just how society works
- 1893 - Durkheim writes about organic solidarity in society and the interdependence of individuals - consensus theory/ functionalism
- 1904 - Weber introduces Interpretivist methodology as a new approach to understanding the experiences of individuals in society
- Early 1900s - first wave Feminists fight for women’s rights including the right to vote
- 1960s - labelling theory emerged with a focus on human behaviour as a result of labels attached to them
- 1960 - 80s - second wave feminism; “the personal is political”
- 1980s - postmodernists recognise the significant changes in society which influence the lives of individuals
- 1990s - third wave feminism, girl power, spice girls, “lipstick feminists”
- 2010 - fourth wave feminism, social media, intersectional and global
