Eight Powerful Study Techniques to Overcome After-School Fatigue and Procrastination
After-School Schedule (Home at 4:00 PM, Gaming First)
Active Reset (Immediately upon arrival)
Upon arriving home, your absolute first step is an Active Reset. Do not get comfortable or reach for your phone. Instead:
Move your body: Stretch, do a few jumping jacks, or take a quick walk outside to clear your head.
Consider a quick cold shower to invigorate yourself and truly signal the end of the school day's fatigue.
Video Games & Dailies (Your immediate reward)
Once you’ve done your active reset, dive into your video games and dailies. This is your dedicated time to enjoy them without guilt.
Set a personal intention: Decide beforehand how long you will play, or what you need to achieve in your dailies, and stick to it. The goal is to get this energy out, not to get stuck.
Mind your energy: Be aware of when you start feeling sluggish or when your brain starts to shut down. This is your cue to transition.
Important: This isn't a free-for-all that lasts for hours. It’s a purposeful segment to enjoy your games, knowing that productive study time is coming next.
Prepare & Prime for Focus (Transition to Study)
After your gaming, it's time to intentionally shift gears into study mode. This block helps your brain transition from leisure to focus.
Hydrate and Fuel: Get a large glass of water and prepare some Real Food snacks (nuts, fruit, protein). Avoid chips, soda, or other junk foods that will lead to energy crashes during study.
Mindfulness Moment: Dedicate about five minutes to Mindfulness and Breathing Exercises. Focus on your breath, feeling the air move in and out, and let go of any tension. This helps train your mind to stay in the present and improves focus, counteracting any lingering gaming excitement.
Set the Scene: Set up your study area. If you use Aromatherapy, diffuse scents like peppermint or rosemary. Put on your headphones and start a Binaural Beats playlist from YouTube or Spotify to help trick your brain into focus mode. Place your Study Mascot on your desk.
Focused Study Block 1
Now, with your mind primed and your immediate gaming desire satisfied, engage in your first dedicated study session. Use your mascot as an accountability tool – when it's on your desk, you are studying. Keep water and healthy snacks nearby. This is your commitment period.
Short Break & Hydration
Take a brief active break (stand, stretch, walk a few steps). Refill your water. Avoid engaging in distracting activities that trigger brain shutdown, like checking social media or lying on your bed. Stay in a proactive mindset.
Focused Study Block 2
Return to your study session. Continue utilizing your aromatherapy, binaural beats, and mascot to maintain focus. If you find your mind wandering, take another minute for mindful breathing.
Dinner and Relaxation
Once you've completed your focused study for the day, you can confidently transition to dinner and full relaxation. If applicable, you might join a virtual Study with Others session for review or collaborative work, or plan for one on campus another day, but your core study and game time are completed.
