God is Power Reading

In the old days, life was characterised by danger, risk and peril.

  • You would need someone with unchallenged power on your side

  • God has absolute power in a precarious and unpredictable situation

    • you need to be able to rely on His power

  • many stories in the Torah testify to the mighty power of God

    • acknowledgment of God’s uniqueness, and radical monotheism

    • the power of God in creation; unchallenged power and Creationism

    • God created everyone in the universe, effortlessly

  • if God is echad, uniquely and exclusively God, then God’s power over all nature and history— the ultimate canvas—is supreme and absolute

  • The God of Israel described in the Bible is absolutely free, not subject to any other primeval realm or law, not dependent on any other power

  • God as the first being; the beginning and the end

    • God also creates evil

    • God is responsible for light and darkness, good (order) and evil

    • dual polarities
