Prefixes

  • a-, an-: means no, not.

  • cata-: means down.

  • hypo-: means deficient, less than, below.

  • para-: means abnormal.

Abbreviations

  • AD: Alzheimer disease (form of dementia).

  • ADHD: attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

  • CA: chronological age (it is often compared to the MA, mental age. CA and MA can be different).

  • CNS: central nervous system.

  • DT: delirium tremens.

  • ECT: electroconvulsive therapy.

  • IQ: An IQ test is a standardized test to determine the mental age of an individual. The average person is considered to have an IQ of between 90 and 110. Those who score below 70 are considered to have an intellectual disability.

  • MA: mental age (as determined by psychological tests).

  • OCD: obsessive-compulsive disorder.

  • PTSD: post-traumatic stress disorder.

  • SAD: seasonal affective disorder.

  • TAT: Thematic Apperception Test.

  • TMS: Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.

  • WAIS: Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale.
