Music Score Reading Level 2 (copy)
Bb instruments: Add 2 sharps (to concert pitch)
F instruments: Add 1 sharp (to concert pitch)
Eb instruments: Add 3 sharps (to concert pitch)
If there are flats, removing one flat counts as adding a sharp
Think of flats as negative sharps
6/8 vs 3/4 time signature
In 6/8, two groups of 3 quavers indicate the time signature
If both on line or both on space, it is diminished 5th. If one on space, one on line, augmented 4th.
If it’s 6 semitones, it’s diminished 5th. If both notes are on a line or both on a space, it’s augmented 4th. If they’re different. Check key signature/accidentals.
Transposing
Spell the notes correctly.
All notes with an accidental in the given part should have an accidental in the transposed part - and nowhere else.
Put all performance notes (dynamics/articulation/etc)
Texture
Monophonic, Homophonic, Polyphonic
Thicker or thinner
Polyphonic only works if it they are like competing rhythms
Homophonic is more another part is complementing the melody
Melody accompaniment
Antiphony (Call and response)
Articulation - Jaunty feel due to staccato
Tempo - is fast, making it feel energized
Jazz/rock inversions:
Chord/lowest notes = write the chord then put /(lowest note played)
Roman numeral inversions
Ia = root position eg C E G, C on bottom (chord + 1)
Ib = first inversion eg C E G, E on bottom (chord + 5)
Ic = second inversion eg C E G, G on bottom (chord + 8)
Id = third inversion eg C E G Bb, Bb on bottom (chord + 11)
Cadences:
V(7) - I = Perfect
_ - V = Imperfect
IV - I = Plagal
V - Vi = Interrupted
Modulation?
Transposing - Include everything
Different types of C chords:
C7 = C E G Bb _7 = 1, 5, 8, 11
Cm7 = C Eb G Bb _m7 = 1, 4, 8, 11
Cmaj7 = C E G B _7 = 1, 5, 8, 12
Cmmaj7 = C Eb G B _7 = 1, 4, 8, 12
Ostinato - When a motif is repeated several times. Used to create a catchy and recognizable tune, or for easy improvisation for other parts
Sequence - When a motif is repeated but with in a lower or higher pitch. Used to create a developing melody, modulate to bring in new notes, etc.
