4.1 Human Rights and Global Conflicts in the Postwar Era
How to get peace:
#1 Germany and German citizens will not be punished. They did hunt the Nazis though. They enemy soliders will change clothing and hide from the solider libertaors, everyone had to be processed. The Nazis went into hiding (escaped country/ kms).
^—- The Nermberg Trials were about getting the Nazis.
#2 Japan got away with a lot (atomic bomb), all they had to do is promise to not bomb America and not to have a military sepertae from America.
#3 LON turned into the UN (not a defense organization). Its a peace watch dog. THey realy just encourage nations to talk to eachother (deplomacy and negoation). America turned from isolationist to interventionist.
The United Nations:
Save suceeding generations for the scrouge of war —> just avoiding yk bloodshed and sorrow
Reaffirm faith and fundemental of human rights (feel like they have something to lose (life, if they want to live they wont want war)), I have a life and my neighbours have life.
Sign treaties and international law (open communication).
Promote social progress (assiss countries that are shaky on human rights and encourage them to better thinking)
#1 - Universal Declaration of Human Rights
John Humphrey (born in New Brunswick) made the declartion of human rights which is great for Canada to be seen as a peacemaking role
Human rights include: helping people get assylum in a coutry (taing refugees in), democracy is important (fasism causes war and thats bad, democracy os great), life is worth living —> no bad treatment)
#2 - The arrival of Jewish orphans
John Hirsh was one of many jewish orphaned the holocaust and holodemor getting adopted in Canada
It was a sorry for the rejection of the Jews during WWII
#3 - Arrival of Displaced Persons (DPs)
When the war ended and people were trying to escape Europe (Russia needed to get kicked out). Russia was burning all the identity and papers. Russia is getting imperistic and people want out
Without I.D. people went West, escaping to West Germany. Without any citizenships and they were lablled DPs)
People had three choices to where they wanted to go: Canada, United States and Austrlia
#5 - Postwar Treatment of Japanese Canadians
King was like “omg japanases people are bad #interment), they deported the backto Japan which was demolished y the bomb
Years after the war internment and the deportaion was lifted
They were given BARELY any compensation
#4 - Amendment to the Chinese Immigration Act
Margret Gould is part of the CRCIA which is a human rights group and they worked together to lift the ban on Chinese immirgration.
Although it was lifted in May 14 the government still got to pick and choose who they wanted in the coutry —> perffered classes, wanting white people
“unsuitable to climate, race, and culture” —> queit rasism
#6 - The Cold War
Creating conditions for war because the Canadian official had a spy ring
Reveals that the cold war is coming closer
#7 - North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
Saves us from the scrouge of war
The WARSAW pact was Russia saying “oh yeah? well I have this too”
#8 - Korean War
Fight between comunist (Russia) and Decomcratic (US) so its between North and South Korea.
