A resource is defined as any source or supply from which a benefit is produced and that possesses utility. Resources are classified into natural and artificial resources. Natural resources are those available in nature, while artificial resources are manufactured by humans. Natural resources are further classified into inexhaustible (renewable) resources and exhaustible (non-renewable) resources. Inexhaustible resources, such as sunlight and air, exist in unlimited quantities, while exhaustible resources, including forests and fossil fuels, can be depleted through consumption. Fossil fuels, formed from the remains of living organisms, include coal, petroleum, and natural gas.

Coal forms through the carbonization of dead vegetation under high pressure and temperature, existing in types based on carbon content:

  • Peat: Low carbon content, used as industrial fuel.
  • Lignite: Brown coal, approximately 38% carbon, mainly for electricity generation.
  • Bituminous: About 65% carbon, used for power generation and producing coke.
  • Anthracite: Hardest variety, over 90% carbon, ideal for engines.

Destructive distillation of coal produces useful by-products:

  • Coke: Nearly pure carbon, burns cleanly as fuel.
  • Coal Tar: Oily liquid with applications in various industries.
  • Coal Gas: Gaseous mixture used as fuel.
  • Ammoniacal Liquor: Byproduct containing dissolved ammonia.

Petroleum, formed from organic remains, undergoes refining to separate its components for various uses, including fuels and lubricants. Natural gas is a cleaner fuel compared to coal and crude oil, while the energy crisis highlights the need for fossil fuel conservation due to their finite availability and environmental impact.

Conservation strategies include using public transport, walking for short trips, and adopting renewables.
