Learning & Conditioning

  • Organisms easily learn associations that are naturally adaptive
    • Example: Hamsters can be conditioned to dig for a food reinforcer, which is an adaptive behavior associated with hunting for food.
    • Example: Pigeons can be taught to flap their wings to avoid a shock or peck to obtain food, associating the behavior of flapping with escape and pecking with finding food.
Biological Constraints
  • Organisms have difficulty learning unnatural pairings

    • Example: Pigeons cannot be taught to peck as a means to escape fear or flap their wings for food.
    • When taught unnatural pairings, animals may revert back to instinctive behaviors, a phenomenon known as Instinctive Drift.
  • Instinctive Drift: Refers to the tendency of trained animals to revert back to natural behaviors that align more closely with their instinctual responses rather than the conditioned responses learned.

Cognitive Learning
  • Latent Learning:

    • Defined as learning that becomes apparent only when there is an incentive to demonstrate it.
  • Cognitive Map:

    • A mental representation of the physical features in the environment that assists in navigation and understanding spatial relationships.

Observational Learning

  • Defined as learning by observing others without direct experience.
Modeling
  • Refers to the process of observing and imitating specific behaviors displayed by others.
The Chameleon Effect
  • Described as "mirroring" another person's behavior, which is often related to empathetic responses, such as feeling others' pain.
Mirror Neurons
  • Neurons located in the frontal lobe that activate both when an individual performs certain actions and when they observe others performing those actions.
    • Important as they enable imitation and empathy.
    • They play a vital role in humans’ social nature by facilitating understanding and sharing of emotions, particularly in contexts such as experiencing pain.
Albert Bandura and the Bobo Doll Experiment
  • Bandura, born in 1925, conducted a significant study called the Bobo Doll Experiment to explore observational learning in children.
    • This study examined how children observed aggression toward a Bobo doll and subsequently modeled that behavior.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Observational Learning
  • Positive applications include using behavior modeling to teach children skills and positive behaviors.

    • This reflects Prosocial Influence.
  • Conversely, observational learning can lead to Antisocial Influence.

    • Example: Abusive parents modeling aggression, perpetuating a cycle of violence.
    • Media often portrays violence as acceptable, especially if committed by attractive perpetrators.
Violence Viewing Effect
  • Observational learning through media can lead to desensitization toward violence, particularly among children.
    • Noteworthy attributes:
    • Attractive perpetrators involved in violence.
    • Violence frequently remains unpunished in media portrayals.
    • Violence is often depicted as justified, with victims’ pain unrepresented.

Video Game Influence

  • Discussion on whether video games teach players to be violent; questions posed include factors that determine who might reenact violent video game scripts.
    • Relevant to researching the catharsis hypothesis, suggesting that venting anger leads to reduced aggression.

Classical vs. Operant Conditioning

  • Classical Conditioning:

    • Organisms learn associations between events they do not control.
    • Reflexive, involuntary behaviors.
    • Extinction occurs when the Conditioned Stimulus (CS) is presented alone repeatedly, causing the Conditioned Response (CR) to decrease.
  • Operant Conditioning:

    • Involves organisms learning associations between their behavior and resulting events.
    • Nonreflexive, voluntary behaviors.
    • Responding decreases when reinforcement ceases.
Cognitive Processes and Biological Predispositions
  • Cognitive Processes:

    • Organisms develop expectations that the CS signals the arrival of the Unconditioned Stimulus (US).
    • In operant conditioning, organisms develop expectations that a response will be reinforced or punished.
    • Some learning can occur without reinforcement.
  • Biological Predispositions:

    • Organisms learn best behaviors similar to their natural instincts.
    • Unnatural behaviors tend to revert to natural tendencies—instinctive drift can impede learning of unnatural pairings.
    • Natural predispositions limit what stimuli and responses can easily be associated.
Types of Motivation
  • Intrinsic Motivation:

    • The internal desire to perform a behavior effectively for its own sake.
  • Extrinsic Motivation:

    • Engaging in certain behaviors to gain rewards or to avoid punishment.
