divorce-legal process that officially ends a marriage

Muslim responses FOR divorce

• certain cases may mean marriage is not working for a couple. For example adultery can be valid reason for divorce

Qur’an- ‘do not approach adultery’

illustrates that if someone in the marriage has had a affair they have broken the Nikah(marriage contract) making a reason for divorce due to their unfaithfulness to their partner

• allah is benevolent(all-loving) so he would want the best treatment for the couple

Qur’an-’the most merciful’

demonstrates that since Allah is all loving and loves those we follow him Muslim should be reassured that Allah still loves them despite divorce, making divorce ok in the eyes of allah

• Marriage is still stated to be a legal contract that can be ended if needed

Qur’an-’of all lawful things’

displays that divorce is something that is still legal within the Islamic faith and since it is not haram(forbidden) Muslim couples should divorce if necessary

Muslims responses AGAINST divorce

• prophet Muhammad expresses is dislike for divorce

Prophet Muhammad stated that ’it is the most hated of all lawful things’

illustrates that as the prophet Muhammad is role model to Muslims, Muslims should strive to follow his example in their daily life thus Muslims should have opposing response to divorce similar to that of the prophet Muhmmad

• it weakens the Ummah(muslims community)

Qur’an-‘do not split into fractions’

demonstrates allah instructs Muslims not to split up as it doesn’t keep the ummah strong therefore divorce should be avoided as it can cause problems within the ummah, weakening it if fractions and sides start to form as a result of the divorce

• it splits the family up

This doesn’t follow the prophet Muhammad’s example of having stable family relationships as Muslims are called to take care of each other hence making divorce unacceptable.
