Impressionism

  • What is Impressionism? What is the style and subject matter of Morisot and Monet? Why work in a series?

    • Impressionism: Capturing “impression” of a scene, artist’s interpretation of light/form

    • Morisot: Focus on value of LEISURE and free time, captures moments in time

      • EX: Summer’s Day, Villa at The Seaside

        • Signs with signature, dashing paint on surface to SUGGEST FORM

    • Monet

      • EX: Rouen Cathedral (30+ series), Stacks of Wheat (25+), Water Lilies (250+)

        • Moves away from reality by focusing on FORM, only painting light surfaces

        • Pure color and your eye does the mixing - thick and visible strokes create artist “handwriting”

      • CRITICS HATED: “It hurts our eyes” lol - unfinished, crude, childish

        • Goes against academy paintings

    • Series work: Capture how TIME/LIGHT change a surface or environment
