Heart Flow Strategies

THE HEART HIGHWAY MNEMONIC

Think of the heart as a two‑lane highway:

• Right side = Blue = “Bad air” blood (deoxygenated)

• Left side = Red = “Lush air” blood (oxygenated)

Now picture a little blue car traveling this route:

1. “Vans → Right Atrium → Right Ventricle → Arteries → Lungs”

Use the phrase:

“VANS RIDE RIGHT, ARTERIES LIFT LUNGS.”

Breakdown:

• VANS = Vena cavas (superior & inferior)

• RIDE RIGHT = Right atrium → Right ventricle

• ARTERIES = Pulmonary arteries

• LIFT LUNGS = Blood goes to lungs to get oxygen

This covers the entire blue side of your diagram.

---

2. “Lungs → Veins → Left Atrium → Left Ventricle → Aorta → Body”

Use the phrase:

“LUNGS’ VEINS LEAD LEFT, VENTRICLE AIMS AORTA.”

Breakdown:

• LUNGS’ VEINS = Pulmonary veins

• LEAD LEFT = Left atrium

• VENTRICLE = Left ventricle

• AIMS AORTA = Blood shoots out the aorta to the body

This covers the red side of your diagram.

SUPER SHORT VERSION (for exam recall)

“Vans → RA → RV → PA → Lungs → PV → LA → LV → Aorta.”

If you can say that in one breath, you can label any heart diagram.

---

COLOR HOOK (matches your image)

• Blue = Right = “R” for Return from body

• Red = Left = “L” for Launch to body

---

LABEL MEMORY TRICK

Use the acronym A‑P‑V‑A to remember the major vessels in order from top to bottom on most diagrams:

Aorta → Pulmonary artery → Veins → Atrium/Ventricle pairs
