Vocabulario de Preparación para el Examen UTNAY - Carrera de Turismo

EXAM COMPOSITION AND EVALUATION AREAS

The UTNAY entrance examination for the Tourism degree consists of a total of 100100 items, referred to as reactivos. These are distributed across five core areas to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of the candidate's skills and knowledge. There are 2020 items dedicated to specific knowledge related to the Tourism career path. Another 2020 items focus on Reading Comprehension. The Writing (Redacción) section contains 2020 items. Logical-Mathematical Thinking contributes another 2020 items. Finally, English proficiency is evaluated through the remaining 2020 items.

READING COMPREHENSION STANDARDS

Reading comprehension is defined as the ability to understand text both at the level of individual word meanings and through a global understanding of the work. This area is evaluated based on three primary cognitive activities: the identification of information, interpretation of the text, and evaluation of form and content.

Identification of information involves the ability to locate specific data, facts, names, reasons, or ideas explicitly stated within a text. Interpretation requires explaining the meaning of an idea, deducing conclusions not explicitly stated, or establishing relationships between different pieces of information provided in the text. Evaluation of form and content involves assessing how information is presented, identifying the overarching purpose of the text, and judging whether the information provided is adequate or appropriate for its communicative intent.

WRITING AND EDITING COMPETENCIES

The Writing section is categorized into three distinct themes: communicative, grammatical/semantic, and orthographic. These themes test the candidate's ability to produce and refine written language effectively.

Communicative writing focuses on the ability to draft messages that are clear and appropriate for a specific situation and a specific recipient. Grammatical and semantic assessment involves the recognition of correct sentence constructions and the deep understanding of the meanings of words and sentences within context. Orthographic proficiency identifies the correct application of writing rules, including accentuation (acentuación) and the proper use of punctuation marks.

LOGICAL-MATHEMATICAL THINKING

Logical-Mathematical Thinking encompasses various facets of mathematical literacy, including connections, estimation, number sense, development of uses, mathematical language, and resignifications. Candidates are expected to reference knowledge from fields such as algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics, and probability.

Connections involve relating different pieces of mathematical information and recognizing how various ideas or representations link together. Estimation is the ability to approximate quantities and judge whether a calculated result is reasonable. Number sense involves a deep understanding of numbers, operations, magnitudes, and the relationships between different quantities. Development of uses refers to utilizing specific mathematical tools and procedures to solve practical situations. Mathematical language tests the ability to interpret symbols, expressions, relations, tables, and representations. Resignifications involve reinterpreting a mathematical situation or representation through different relationships or meanings.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY

The English evaluation is structured around four target reading and writing skills: reading for orientation, reading for information and argument, creative writing, and the writing of reports and essays.

Reading for orientation involves understanding brief texts to find practical information such as instructions, signs, locations, schedules, or directions. Reading for information and argument focuses on locating specific details, identifying main ideas, and comprehending the underlying arguments of a text. Creative writing pertains to the production of simple texts with a clear communicative intention. The writing of reports and essays involves the clear and coherent organization of information in a formal written format.

FUNDAMENTAL TOURISM DEFINITIONS

Tourism is defined as the set of activities related to travel and temporary stays by individuals outside their habitual environment. This includes the activities performed by visitors and the services that facilitate their experiences. A visitor is any person who displaces themselves temporarily outside their usual environment for a reason permitted under tourism activities, without the intent of permanent establishment.

A critical distinction exists between a tourist and an excursionist based on the duration of the visit. A tourist is a person who visits a location outside their habitual environment and remains for at least one night; this overnight stay, or pernocta, is the defining characteristic. An excursionist is a visitor who conducts a visit without staying the night at the destination, often arriving and returning on the same day.

TOURISM CLASSIFICATION AND MODALITIES

Tourism is categorized into various modalities based on the primary motivation of the traveler. Cultural tourism is driven by the desire to learn about heritage, history, art, traditions, customs, and cultural expressions. Nature tourism involves the enjoyment of natural spaces and resources while striving for the responsible use of the environment. Adventure tourism incorporates recreational activities that involve physical or mental challenges, typically developed in natural or open-air settings. Rural tourism is linked to rural communities where visitors experience local lifestyles, culture, and environments.

Gastronomic tourism centers on food, beverages, cooking, and culinary experiences as the main travel motivation. Business tourism describes trips made for professional or commercial reasons, including meetings, events, congresses, conventions, or corporate activities.

TOURISM INDUSTRY OPERATIONS AND MANAGEMENT

The tourism industry relies on various entities and structures to function. A tourism destination is a territory that brings together attractions, services, infrastructure, and conditions necessary to receive visitors. A tourism attraction is any natural, cultural, historical, or architectural element capable of generating interest and motivating a visit. The tourism product is the assembly of elements forming an experience, combining attractions, activities, lodging, transport, and food.

Tourism supply (oferta turística) represents the total set of products, services, attractions, and infrastructure available at a destination. Tourism demand (demanda turística) refers to the individuals who wish to travel and consume these services, influenced by their needs, preferences, time, and economic capacity. Marketing in tourism involves applying strategies to identify markets, communicate offers, and influence travel decisions. Market segmentation is the process of dividing the market into groups with similar characteristics or needs to design appropriate offerings.

Service providers include the hospitality sector (hotelería), dedicated to accommodation and guest services. Travel agencies act as intermediaries that advise on and sell services. Tour operators organize and integrate various services to create and operate tourism products. A tour package (paquete turístico) combines two or more services, such as transportation and lodging. Tour guides are individuals who accompany and orient visitors, providing relevant information about history, culture, and locations.

SOCIO-ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT AND SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainable tourism seeks a balance between economic benefits, environmental protection, and respect for social and cultural dimensions. Responsible tourism is a specific practice aimed at reducing negative impacts, respecting local communities and heritage, and acting consciously within the environment. Cultural heritage (patrimonio cultural) consists of the assets, knowledge, and expressions valued by a community that require conservation for future generations.

Service quality is measured by the degree to which a service meets the visitor's expectations, heavily influenced by reliability, communication, and problem-solving. The overall tourism experience is the visitor's global perception created by attractions, services, environment, and personal expectations. Potential impacts of tourism include environmental impacts (changes to the natural surroundings) and sociocultural impacts (changes to community customs, social relationships, and cultural identity), both of which require responsible management.

PRACTICAL CASE STUDIES AND APPLICATIONS

To apply logical reasoning to tourism concepts, consider the following examples. If a person travels to another city, stays for three nights, and visits attractions, they are classified as a tourist. If a family visits a town during the morning and returns home the same afternoon without staying the night, they are classified as excursionists. A destination offering a combination of beaches, hotels, transport, and restaurants exemplifies tourism supply (oferta turística). Choosing a destination specifically for its museums and architecture is an example of cultural tourism.

In a mathematical context, calculating the cost of a travel package involves the summation of individual services. For a package including transportation at 800800, lodging at 12001200, and an activity at 300300, the total cost is calculated as:

800+1200+300=2300800 + 1200 + 300 = 2300

Application in other areas involves identifying the main idea of a specific text for Reading Comprehension, selecting the most grammatically clear sentence for Writing, or identifying specific instructional data in an English text.
